{"id":5501,"date":"2017-03-16T13:30:38","date_gmt":"2017-03-16T10:30:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tourism.plus4d.com\/2017\/03\/16\/u-s-support-brings-community-together-around-cultural-heritage\/"},"modified":"2017-03-16T13:30:38","modified_gmt":"2017-03-16T10:30:38","slug":"u-s-support-brings-community-together-around-cultural-heritage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tourismworld-seyaha.com\/?p=5501","title":{"rendered":"U.S. Support Brings Community Together Around Cultural Heritage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin-left: 30pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000; background-color: #ffff00;\">WTTEN<\/span>-A<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">M<span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.1pt;\">M<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.2pt;\">A<\/span>N<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">(March 12, 2017)\u2013<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">The United States government and the Department of Antiquities celebrated the achievements of 17 Ghawr Al Safi residents who completed intensive trainings in fields related to cultural heritage. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 30pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">The trainings were made possible through the United States Agency for International Development\u2019s Sustainable Cultural Heritage Through Engagement of Local Communities Project (SCHEP).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 30pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cPreservation of our cultural heritage begins here \u2013 with the community. The Department of Antiquities is proud to be building capacity within local communities to empower them to conserve and protect these sites, and for all of us to come together to celebrate our shared history,\u201d said H.E. Dr. Monther Jamhawi, Director General of the Department of Antiquities, as he handed out certificates to the program graduates .<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 30pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Attendees included Dr. Konstantinos Politis, SCHEP\u2019s Project Director at Ghawr Al Safi, the new graduates and community members. Attendees toured Tawahin Al Sukkar, a sugar mill that flourished during the period from the 11<sup>th<\/sup> to 15<sup>th<\/sup> century A.D. and made the area a center of sugar production and marketing for the entire region. The tour was followed by the presentation of certificates to graduates at the Museum at the Lowest Place on Earth and lunch prepared by members of the local community. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 30pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">USAID SCHEP is a four-year project dedicated to economic and community development through cultural heritage preservation and education in underserved communities. USAID SCHEP is currently active in nine sites: Umm al Jimal, Ghawr as Safi, Busayra, Petra, Bayt Ra\u2019as in Irbid, Wadi Ramm, Aqaba, Madaba and Bir Madhkur in Wadi Araba.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 30pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cSeeing what they have achieved, their progress and their enthusiasm, it\u2019s really impressive,\u201d said Politis., of the Helenic Society for Near Eastern Studies, who has been working in the area for nearly 20 years and has spearheaded SCHEP\u2019s efforts here since the project\u2019s inception in 2014. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 30pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">With SCHEP support, the program worked on archaeological conservation and landscaping, produced a walking path for visitiors, installed interperative panels and worked with the nearby Museum at the Lowest Place on Earth on several restoration and documentation activities. Those graduating from the intensive two-month training courses were trained in archaeological object conservation, clearing archaeological sites and museum management. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 30pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">SCHEP also worked to foster an appreciation for cultural heritage among the area\u2019s youngest residents through an interactive education program. Members of SCHEP\u2019s local staff have partnered with H.M. Queen Rania\u2019s Madrasati Initiative, to hold a series of cultural heritage workshops and field trips for members of the nearby Ghawr Fefa school. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 30pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">\u201cFor some of these children it\u2019s the first time they\u2019ve had a field trip in over two years,\u201d said Bilal al Deghemat, a local member of the SCHEP team who organized the educational events. \u201cIt\u2019s so important that they learn about their history from a young age and develop an appreciation for cultural heritage.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">&nbsp;The United States government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), has provided foreign assistance from the American people to Jordan for more than 60 years.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WTTEN-AMMAN(March 12, 2017)\u2013The United States government and the Department of Antiquities celebrated the achievements of 17 Ghawr Al Safi residents who completed intensive trainings in fields related to cultural heritage.
